About Me

I am the grandson of 885 Private J C McNeill 1/8th Royal Scots TF (born 1896 in Tranent)who was  a miner and one of the originals who survived the war, surving throughout. He went back into the mines after the war only to suffer a serious back injury. He went on to become a school caretaker in Tranent after long rehabilitation and was ultimately Provost of Tranent for a time. He fathered four children with Mary Wood. One, David went on to Edinburgh University and was to serve in the RAF during WW2 but died of complications of typhoid fever contracted whilst serving as a pilot with coastal command in Cyprus in 1945, another John served in the parachute regiment in India during WW2. John Crwford McNeill DCM JP died in 1968.
