8th Royal Scots https://www.newbattleatwar.com/apps/photos/ 8th Royal Scots William J R Gemmill OC 8th RS Born in 1877, entered G.W.C. in 1889. He was a prominent E. Lothian agriculturalist and a most public-spirited man. He went through the S. African War with the Lothians and Berwickshire Yeomanry, being awarded the Queen's Medal with four clasps. Joining the 7th V.B.R.S. (now 8th R.S.) as a Lt. in 1904, he went to France in Nov. 1914 with the rank of Major, and was second in command. On the death of his O.C. he took command in May 1915, with the rank of Lt.-Col. He won the D.S.O., was mentioned in Despatches thrice, and was awarded an Italian decoration (Order of St. Maurice and St. Lazarus). A further man named Reid died but nothing more is known at this point. Walter Romanel was an officer with the 8th. Most , if not all of these men served. C. Bailey, Edin., was born in 1885, and attended G.W.C. 1890-1900. He was the first winner of the School diving trophy. On leaving he went to Ceylon as a tea planter, and then moved to Singapore, where he held an important post under the Straits Trading Coy. He came home to join up, and was gazetted early in 1915 to the 1/8th R.S. W.C. in 1887 at the age of six. After leaving School in 1897, he studied law at Edin. Univ., and qualified as a solicitor. After a period of service in the 8th R.S., he trained as an Officer Cadet at Gailes. The elder son of Mr. J. L. Moncur, managing director of Messrs. Mackenzie and Moncur, Edin., was born in 1892, and attended G.W.C. 1898-1911, where he was prominent in the athletic clubs, being in the 1st XV. of 1910-11. He was also a member of the O.T.C. He entered his father's firm on leaving, and meanwhile played for the Watsonian 'A' XV. Joining the 9th R.S. when war broke out, he went to France. Later he obtained a commission. Bone, Edin., was born in 1888, and attended G.W.C. 1899-1904. He went to Edinburgh College of Art, where he won a travelling scholarship, and on completing his course received the full Architectural Diploma. On the outbreak of war, he joined the 9th R.S., and took part in severe fighting for sixteen months from Feb. 1915. His impressions and memories of these days were fixed in a series of water-colours which were exhibited in Edinburgh, and attracted much public attention. L. Hendry, Edin., was born in 1898, and attended G.W.C. 1904-14. He passed on to the E. of Scot. Agricultural College in 1915, where he distinguished himself in his classes. Weir, was born in 1886, entered G.W.C. in 1901, and on leaving studied Arts at Edin. Univ. 1905-7. He was a schoolmaster. Mobilised in Aug. 1914 as a Col.-Sgt. in the 8th R.S., he won speedy promotion, holding the rank of Lt. by Jan. 1915. He served in France and was mentioned in Despatches. Proceeding to Edin. Univ., he graduated M.A. and LL.B., winning the Hurst Scholarship (1905) and the Vans Dunlop (1908). He had won for himself a high place among the junior counsel at the Scottish Bar, when, at the outbreak of war, he enlisted in the 5th R.S. Gazetted to the 8th R.S. in Apr. 1915, he served in France, and during the attack on Nov. 13, 1916, was wounded, and succumbed to his injuries four days later.
